However, we keep pushing and finding new and better ways to accomplish our goals; the top of which is to serve our customers to the best of our ability. Kiambu County

In line with the objectives of the “Kenya Vision 2030” program, the Kiambu County Government has invested in improved water storage and delivery infrastructure within its constituency.

Collaboration Engineering Solutions and Products (CESP – Kenya) were privileged to partner with Kiambu County Government to supply, deliver, install and commission three new water tanks in Kiambu County at Githunguri and Kiambaa constituencies. These projects were funded by The Kiambu County Government with significant involvement from local stakeholders and water companies in the area.

At Githunguri an old masonry tank was demolished and a new Pioneer Water Tank with 250,000 litres gross capacity was installed. It was a landmark local project with the local community highly involved in the entire process from ground breaking and demolition, through to construction and commissioning of the tank.

Gone are the constant water losses and ongoing maintenance costs of the masonry tank and in its place is a strong and durable steel liner tank made in Australia from high performance Colorbond® steel and Aqualiner®.

New 250kL Pioneer Water Tank at Githunguri

At Kiambaa two new Pioneer Water Tanks each with a gross capacity of 50,000 litres were installed and commissioned by CESP-Kenya and they are now servicing the population and providing the local Kiambu community with a secure and reliable water supply.

The Aqualiner® inside a Pioneer Water Tank is a high-tech internal geo-membrane that is the result of 30 years of continuous research, development, testing and improvement in some of the harshest water containment conditions in the world in Australia. Its pedigree is unmatched in terms of its ability to reliably store and secure water whilst meeting the highest global standards of health, safety and water quality for all water consumers.

CESP-Kenya are extremely pleased to be able to deliver these two successful projects to the Kiambu County Government and are very proud to know that these tanks will reliably supply clean, fresh drinking water to the local communities for many years to come.

Britam Towers

Britam Tower has been described by many as magnificent, iconic and even a flagship for Vision 2030- Kenya’s economic blueprint. The 32- story edifice has a total height of 200 meters, sits on a 1.5 acre piece of land along Hospital Road in Upper Hill and is the third tallest building in Africa. The Britam Tower boasts a prismic shape which has been achieved by having a base with four corners and a roof with two corners. This prismatic 3D geometry allows all floors to differ in shape and size thus catering for a variety of different tenancy requirements.

One of the most incredible features is the building’s magnificent, specially engineered façade. It is made up of special high-performance glass which conforms to certain design requirements with regards to heat and light transmission, as well as impact resistance.

Question is: where would one begin in the cleaning of such windows to ensure that their integrity is upheld? Well this has been made possible by the windows’ self-cleaning mechanism as well as the quality of water used to do the actual cleaning.

Britam contracted CESP Africa for the provision of state-of-the-art water treatment systems for purification of all their water. The water used to clean the glass is passed through a Reverse Osmosis System that purifies at a rate of 0.3 liters per second. The purification process removes any sediments and chemicals in the water that may cause damage to the glass of the building’s façade during cleaning.

A second Reverse Osmosis System operating at a rate of 0.4 liters per second was installed together with an ultra-violet system to purify all the water from the borehole before it is distributed throughout the building’s consumption points. This means that water flowing through each and every tap at the Britam Tower is safe for drinking!

CESP Africa also installed a 50 cubic meter per day waste water system that treats all the grey-water that is produced throughout the entire building before release into the sewer line.  This ensures that hazardous waste water is in no way released to the environment from the Towers.

The Hub Mall

The Karen Hub is a mixed use complex set on 20 acres in the heart of Karen that opened its gates on February 4th 2016. It is 200 meters along the Dagoretti Road, from the Karen roundabout. The Hub comprises of stylish buildings and open-sided walkways, with a centerpiece of a large square or piazza. It boasts a man-made lake overlooked by restaurants; and there is parking space for 1,200 cars. It houses shops dealing in fashion, furniture, fitness, and various eateries, with Carrefour – the huge and prestigious French supermarket – as its anchor client.

CESP Africa was sub-contracted by Laxmanbhai Construction Limited- the main contractor of the Karen Hub project – to supply and install a waste water system. A 50,000 GPD JET Waste Water Treatment System was installed by CESP Africa at the Karen Hub and it took only 15 months for the system to be up and running. This system treats both the grey and black water that is produced during the day to day activities at the mall. The treated water is then reused for outdoor purposes within the malls environs.

A SCADA monitoring system was also installed at The Karen Hub by CESP so as to gather and analyze data collected from the Waste Water Treatment System and provide the System Operators with timely reports of its performance, thus enabling faster and more efficient control and monitoring of the installed Treatment System.

CHOLERA IN KENYA

What is cholera??

According to the Ministry of Health, Kenya has been reporting cases of cholera since May this year. So far, there are about 146 cases with 4 deaths being reported countrywide.

The World Health Organization defines cholera as a serious intestinal infection resulting in a painless water diarrhea . The main routes of transmission are ingestion of water and food contaminated by animal or human feces and urine that contain the causative bacteria, Vibrio cholerae.

The major risk factors associated with this disease are; limited access to safe drinking water, poor sanitation and poor hygiene practices.

The main clinical features associated with cholera are a painless water diarrhea and dehydration.These features eventually lead to a rapid loss of body fluids that may result to death if not treated.

This disease is easy to treat by replacing the lost fluids and salts in the body. WHO (World Health Organisation) recommends administration of oral dehydration salts (O.R.S) as fluid replacement. However, those patients with severe cases need administration of the appropriate antibiotics and intravenous (IV) fluids.

CESP’s Solution to curb Cholera.

At CESP, we offer products and solutions that ensure access to portable water and improved sanitation to our clients.

First, we treat waste water on site and discharge it to the environment , with our effluent having fully satisfied NEMA discharge requirements as well as international standards. We provide tertiary treatment of waste water for our clients, to ensure zero fecal coli forms and other indicator bacteria in the effluent that might result in waterborne diseases like cholera.

Two Rivers Mall

Two Rivers Mall, the largest shopping mall in east and central Africa. Located between the Northern Bypass and Limuru Road and sits on a whopping 1.7 million square feet/39 acres, thus providing over 700,000 square feet of leasable space.

Two Rivers Mall is owned by Two Rivers Lifestyle Company Ltd which is a coalition of several firms including, Centum Group, the majority shareholder; Aviation Industry Corporation of China (Avic) and ICDC a state-owned firm.

The mall consists of medium density residential homes, office blocks, a shopping center, as well as a vast range of restaurants one of which is the City Lodge’s three-star 170 key hotel. Some other renowned tenants include Carrefour, the French retailer, which operates more than 12,000 outlets globally, and is the mall’s anchor tenant; the Turkish luxury fashion line LC Waikiki, Woolworths, Hugo Boss and Nike.

Right from the start of construction and overall development of the mall, the owners knew that they wanted the project to be compliant with international green standards. With this in mind, CESP Africa was subcontracted by Athena Properties Ltd –the property managers- to provide a wholesome and eco-friendly Wastewater Treatment solution.

CESP proposed a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) Aerobic Wastewater Treatment System. These terms may seem complex and daunting, however what the system basically does is treat the collected waste water using bacteria, whose purpose is to feed on this waste. These bacteria are provided with oxygen in order for survival as well as to operate at optimal levels, thus the system is referred to as an aerobic wastewater treatment system. The MBBR technology employs polyethylene biofilm carriers which provide a protected and increased surface area to support the growth of these bacteria. It is this high-density population of bacteria that achieves high-rate biodegradation within the system, while also offering process reliability and ease of operation. At the end of this whole treatment process Two Rivers mall was to obtain colorless, odorless and environmentally-friendly effluent.

This was to be a one-of-a-kind system for CESP Africa as it would be one of the largest Wastewater Treatment Projects installed in Africa. CESP took up the challenge and with their long-time business partners JET Inc. embarked on the installation of what was to be a gargantuan system. Jet Inc. is an American firm and is the respected world leader in wastewater treatment technology. Since 1955, the firm has provided products that have been developed with the industry’s longest service life and lowest repair rates and CESP Africa is the authorized distributor of the Jet Inc. products in Sub-Saharan Africa.

CESP conducted multiple site visits, attended a good number of meetings with the different shareholders and fellow sub-contractors as well as designed and redesigned the layout and structure of the system together with the dedicated engineers at JET Inc. with painstaking attention to detail so as to ensure that not a single item was left out.

Installation of the 1,135 m3 / 300,000 GPD (Gallons per Day) or 1,135,624 liters per day Wastewater Treatment System then began with the CESP workmen and engineers working tirelessly to ensure the timely completion of the project. Besides, the wastewater treatment system, CESP also installed a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. This SCADA system allows for remote monitoring, data logging as well as diagnosis of the installed wastewater treatment system hence providing CESP a timely, safer and overall, more efficient project maintenance procedure.

The mall has since been opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony that was held on the 14th of February 2017 and was graced by the Kenyan President Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta. It is approximated that 120,105 people visited the mall that day and CESP is proud to say that their Wastewater Treatment System was able to handle all the waste generated on that peak day and effectively continues to do so a couple of months down the line.

The Two Rivers Management puts this effluent (treated wastewater) to good use such as irrigating their expansive grounds as well as a reserve in the case of fire-fighting and any excess effluent is discharged into River Gichiie. All of this released effluent is in line with the requirements by the local environment regulator (NEMA) for discharge and reuse.

Through this partnership with CESP Africa, Two Rivers development is able to reuse 80% of all the water now and in the future creating a cyclic environment for the entire ecosystem. Additionally, it has created a sustainable shopping, living & working experience for all at the Two Rivers.
